Artist Statement
My images are generally figurative, simple (single figure), and are often self-portraits. I explore the complexity of human life, identity, and emotion. In each piece, I strive to capture the nuances of my character and the truth of what lies underneath the surface. Through the depiction of myself, I aim to reveal universal human experiences, hoping that others can see themselves in my work.
Despite the simplicity of the imagery, there is a depth in the storytelling. The lines I draw are deliberate and measured, creating a delicate balance between form and meaning. This balance is crucial in portraying the emotional layers of identity and experience, allowing the viewer to contemplate their own emotions through a different lens.
The work maintains a sense of formal harmony but also reflects the struggle of finding emotional balance. It invites introspection and empathy, offering a bridge between personal and collective understanding. Through these works, I hope to create a dialogue with the viewer, encouraging them to reflect on their own identity and emotions, fostering a shared human connection.
The Backboned Series, a new body of work which is exhibited at the William Way for the first time, consists of large self-portraits which examine the back in various poses. These drawings vividly capture the essence of both fragility and fortitude. The Backboned Series serves as a powerful metaphor for the strength of character, embodying courage and the unwavering ability to stand resolute in one’s convictions. It symbolizes an indomitable spirit, fierce determination, and a steadfast refusal to be swayed by external pressures or daunted by challenges. My hope in creating these images is that they evoke a deep emotional resonance, reminding us of the inner fortitude required to navigate life’s adversities with grace, resolve, and defiance in the face of struggle.
