MISSION

The Elder Initiative works to champion and support the diverse community of LGBTQ+ elders in the greater Philadelphia area. To achieve this, we offer social engagement programs, provide services and promote resources that are attuned to the unique needs and life experiences of the LGBTQ+ older adult population.

VISION

The Elder Initiative is devoted to working towards an inclusive future where all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults have equal access to opportunities toward dynamic, connected, and enriching lives.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

The Doctor Is In

A community partnership with Pride at the Jefferson Center for Healthy Aging. Each month this Healthy Aging program provides resources, support, and education on a wide range of topics from mental health to physical well-being. Sessions are facilitated by geriatrician and director of Pride at Jefferson, Dr. Michael Danielewicz. Join other LGBTQ+ older adults for these unique healthy aging presentations. Zoom link below. 

Schedule:
A one-hour program (12 PM - 1 PM) on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
In person at John C Anderson LGBT Friendly Apartments (251 S. 13th), lunch is provided.

Thrivers

Facilitated by Jeff Haskins, a long-time advocate in the HIV & aging field, Thrivers focuses on the social, educational, and emotional needs of long-term survivors and anyone with personal experiences relating to HIV/AIDS. Thrivers creates opportunities for group members to share their unique life experiences and to connect with others in a safe inclusive space. Come thrive with us! An in-person 90 minute program (12 PM - 1:30 PM) at the Church of St. Luke & the Epiphany (330 S. 13th Street) on the last Saturday of the month, lunch is provided.

 

Chronic Disease Self-Management (New 2026)

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is an evidence-based 6-session peer-led course for individuals living with any chronic health condition. The curriculum focuses on developing strategies to better manage symptoms, improve quality of life, maintain social supports, and lower health care costs.

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

Tuesday MorningsOut

A weekly social and educational program for gay, bisexual and trans men 50 and older. Traditionally, the format of MorningsOut rotates between speaker presentations, topic discussions, exercise classes, outings, virtual meetings, and special gatherings throughout the year. Join us at any time for opportunities to socialize, engage in discussions, and learn about the valuable resources and services available in our community.

Friday Check In

This facilitated weekly virtual check-in is a friendly, confidential space where LGBTQ+ older adults talk about their week and share whatever else might be on their mind.

The Elder Community Coalition (ECC)

The ECC is a stakeholder group made up of long-term survivors, people working ​in community, allies​ and those otherwise affected by HIV/AIDS.​ Members gather to discuss ideas for topic discussions and presentations for Thrivers. More broadly, new areas of interest are brought forward to help shape the future of our HIV & Aging ​offering. Beyond this, members partner with LGBTQ+ organizations to ​help maintain a single source for programs, services and resources related to HIV and Aging. ​

The PCA LGBTQ+ Advisory Council

The Elder Initiative is fully engaged with the ongoing work of this council. The Elder Initiative Program manager, Ed Miller is the co-chair of the council and helps to lead projects and sustain engagement between mainstream providers, PCA and LGBTQ+ organizations. Established in 2023.

John C. Anderson LGBT Friendly Apartments

Elder Initiative Social Engagement at JCAA - In partnership with Pennrose Properties and the William Way LGBT Community Center, the Elder Initiative offers supportive services and social engagement programs for residents of the John C. Anderson LGBT Friendly Apartments.

Action Wellness - Onsite biweekly services include medical case management, benefits support, and access to health resources.

Danceteria: Twice-weekly dance and movement class for older adults - the only one of its kind in the city of Philadelphia. Led by two dancers with decades of combined experience, this class is held at the John C Anderson LGBT Friendly Apartments (251 S 13th Street).
