Dedicated to the memory of Bianca Console

The art exhibitions presented by the William Way LGBT Community Center throughout 2020 were never intended to be viewed exclusively in an online format. However, with the closing of our physical building due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all art exhibitions scheduled for 2020 will be presented as online exhibitions.

Although never the same as experiencing artworks in the Community Center’s gallery, online art exhibitions provide a safe viewing alternative, promote the artist’s creativity, and provide an opportunity for interested viewers to purchase artworks.

Prices for works that are available for sale are listed within the captions for each artwork. 65% of each sale will go to the artist and 35% will go to the Community Center to support our arts & culture programs. If you would like to make a purchase please email John Anderies, who will make arrangements to take your credit card information over the phone and make artwork delivery arrangements.

Thank you so much for your continued support and patronage of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ artists and the Community Center’s arts & culture programs.

In William Way’s first Student Art Exhibition, the strengths and the joys of being Queer are on full display. For these Philadelphia-based artists, their education provides the time and space to experiment, not only in terms of media and technique but also in terms of self and community. To be an art student in 2020 means to be in constant conversation with the world around us. As a thriving body of knowledge and experience, the artists of this show express the power of resistance. Moving past simple definitions of what it means to be Queer, these artists seek to transcend preconceived notions on the LGBTQIA+ community. Each student has brought something new to the table, a different perspective, and a unique voice through their artworks.

For these students, their artistic practice is their passion. Art means the freedom to envision beauty in Queerness. It means manifesting different futures for ourselves and our communities. It means celebrating our culture and our ancestors. It means loving who you are now and taking pride in your continual transformation. It means embracing the broad range of intersecting identities and expressions within our community. It means lifting each other’s voices and standing together in solidarity. Our art is a reminder that we exist and we will never go away. We will only become more visible. To share one's art is an action against a system that works against us. Progress does not always come in the form of protest signs and social media. Progress comes from developing an attitude and a style of one's own and sharing those talents with the world. We as a community are resilient.

It’s our hope that you share this exhibition with friends and family to expand these dialogues beyond the confines of your digital screen.
