Refigured, Unframed:

An Exhibition with Philly Queer Life Drawing

Queer Joy and Community: Photographs by Sarah Dixon
Sarah Dixon has documented Philly Queer Life Drawing’s events through extraordinarily composed photographs for several years. These images are remarkable in their ability to capture the joy and strong sense of community at their meetings. The first selection of photos were taken at various life drawing events at Tattooed Mom, a bar on South Street that hosts a variety of events, and Philly Queer Life Drawing’s primary meeting space over the years.

The second group of photos were taken at an event last summer called “Heavenly Bodies,” hosted in Fleisher Art Memorial’s repurposed 1880s church sanctuary. This extraordinary event featured 5 stations with queer, trans, POC, and plus-sized models with custom-made backdrops, props, and costumes. The event was much more than a themed life drawing session, it was a powerful reaffirmation that queer bodies are beautiful and sacred. The photos included in this exhibition will become a part of the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives here at the William Way LGBT Community Center, ensuring that the memory of these events are preserved for future generations.

Sarah studied at Tyler School of Art and is currently based in State College, PA. She is dedicated to preserving life’s moments, seeing the truth and beauty in the smallest things and bringing them to our attention. The art exhibitions presented by the William Way LGBT Community Center throughout 2020-2021 were never intended to be viewed exclusively in an online format. However, with the closing of our physical building due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all art exhibitions scheduled for 2020-21 will be presented as online exhibitions.

Although never the same as experiencing artworks in the Community Center’s gallery, online art exhibitions provide a safe viewing alternative, promote the artist’s creativity, and provide an opportunity for interested viewers to purchase artworks.

Prices for works that are available for sale are listed within the captions for each artwork. 65% of each sale will go to the artist and 35% will go to the Community Center to support our arts & culture programs. If you would like to make a purchase please email John Anderies, who will make arrangements to take your credit card information over the phone and make artwork delivery arrangements.

Thank you so much for your continued support and patronage of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ artists and the Community Center’s arts & culture programs.
