I SAVED A CHAIR FOR YOU
“Re-Worked Tapestries”
The five tapestries on this gallery are new works made out of older artworks, many of them were initially woven in small segments (often on public transit or outside of the studio) which were later combined. Each deal with various political or social issues: Field of Poppies and Narcan Prayer Rug – U.S.A/LGBT Community both ask the viewer to consider the drug overdose crisis, Housing First was made thinking about the unhoused neighbors in our city, and Peace for Ukraine reflects on Russia’s war with Ukraine.
Through all these different topics, artmaking and weaving have become tools for the artist to contemplate and deal with these issues. Breathe/Weave acknowledges this process of weaving by including the words “breath” and “weave” into a loom, which has been tufted onto stretched fabric.
