The Way Gay U series of educational classes continues this summer with new offerings and repeats of popular courses. Register online below to be part of the summer term!

In June 2005, Philadelphia's LGBT community received a remarkable gift when local business owner Mel Heifetz paid off the Community Center's mortgage. The Center's Board of Directors dedicated the resulting annual savings to expand community programming. In March 2006, Way Gay U debuted with a series of educational classes designed specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Way Gay U provides opportunities to learn new skills, practical information and educational knowledge in an LGBT-focused social environment. Join Way Gay U today!

Early registration is strongly recommended; class sizes are limited. Requests for refunds will be accepted up until seven (7) days prior to the beginning date and time of the class selected and must be made in writing. Cancellation of a class may be decided based upon the number of registrants. If a class is cancelled, registration fees will be refunded in full. Ashtanga Yoga
This popular class from Way Gay U’s Spring session continues this summer. Taught by Sheila Pasupathy from the Yoga Loft. Stay healthy, fit and relaxed this summer and look great in your swim suit. Ashtanga is based on the principal of synchronizing breath with movement, while at the same time generating internal heat to facilitate detoxification, blood circulation and flexibility. This course covers the fundamentals of breathing, sun salutations, standing sequence, sitting series and closing sequence. Participants may enroll for the entire 9-week series or on a week-by-week basis. Participants should bring yoga mats.

Cocktail Party Basics
Want to make delicious and colorful martinis at home like a pro? Taught by Austin Algeo, one of Philadelphia’s most popular bartenders from Woody’s who is TIPS and RAMP certified. Impress your guests with cocktail know-how. Host safe and fun summer parties and learn how to stock a bar, the differences between top shelf and basic liquors, and how to pair the right glass with the right drink. What are the must-have mixers? Which common drinks for summer entertaining do you need to be prepared to offer at your party? Learn to pour the most popular cocktails and those fancier drinks to wow your friends. Plus, Austin will teach you how to make the perfect martini and other martini variations.

Dinners Club
Dine in style and meet other food lovers at Way Gay U’s Diner’s Club. We will enjoy a delicious, specially prepared menu at Astral Plane and presentation by owner Reed Apaghian. Enjoy the custom menu created specifically for Way Gay U and learn about the work of a successful restaurateur that includes selecting the freshest ingredients in the morning to creating delicious menu items for diners in the evening. Diners will also be able to take an optional tour of the kitchen for an added “behind-the-scenes” look at this delightful Philadelphia restaurant. Prix fixe includes the menu below, but does not include liquor or wine. Registration fee does not include liquor or wine. Register with the Center. Diners will meet at the restaurant on Wednesday, June 28 at 6:30 pm.

Drawing Fundamentals: A Mixed Media Drawing Class
This class will begin with drawing still life objects and move to drawing live models and working from the human form. Taught by Gilbert Lewise, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art. The class will support students of all levels of art experience both individually and in a group setting. The focus is on the pleasure or drawing, utilizing class drawing materials such as pencil, charcoal and ink. The student may choose to use other drawing materials including colored pencil, pastels or marker. The first three classes will be loosely structured to include quick sketches of still life and work towards more finished drawings. The fourth, fifth and sixth classes will include drawing from life models using the student’s choice of media. Other subject matter will include personal photographs of family, friends and pets. Students will have fun as they progress from the elements of basic drawing to creating fully developed tonal and full color studies. As in life, each student will bring his or her own experiences that will be reflected in the drawing process. Registration includes model fee.


Elegant Floral Design
Taught by Jimmy Bason, one of Philadelphia’s top floral designers from All Occasions Flowers on South Street. Learn all of the industry standard techniques for creating elegant and breath-taking floral displays and enjoy hands-on experience creating your own unique floral masterpiece. Which flowers work well together? How do you arrange their color, shape and size? Learn how to create floral arrangements for any occasion and learn that special touch to add floral beauty to your parties and your home. Flowers and materials are included in the registration fee.


Gay Wedding Planning
With wedding season in full swing, the nation’s leading gay wedding planning experts, Kathryn Hamm of GayWeddings.com and Bernadette Smith of It’s About Time, bring their Gay Wedding Planning seminar to Philadelphia. They will help you answers questions such as, What kind of ceremony do you want to have? Whose family should pay for the reception dinner? How do you delicately share news of your registry? And, how do you select a gay-friendly site for your ceremony? This three-hour program, while fun and informative, will cover these topics and more including: etiquette, invitations, budget, vendor selection, locations and legal issues around gay marriage. Each registered couple will receive a wedding planning binder, packed with helpful planning resources and tips. Kathryn and Bernadette have facilitated this seminar to full houses in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.


Get Smart about Home Repair
Whether you live in an apartment or own a house, knowing the basics of home repair can save you a lot of time, money and hassle. Got a hole in the drywall? Not sure how to hang a heavy picture? Why pay a contractor hundreds of dollars when many of the basic home repairs are things you can easily do yourself? Learn how to do the job right and save money and time. Who better to teach the basics the Center’s very own maintenance magician, Jon Wexler, who will show you all the insider tips you need to know in order to do the job right the first time. You will learn about painting, drywall repair and hanging, working with trim, sawing, hammering and hanging pictures. The class will also cover the essential tools for the job and different kinds of materials available for your projects. Class participants will have hands-on learning. Spend your time and money wisely and learn the basics of home repair. Registration fee includes materials and the use of some tools. Optional tool purchase is not covered by the registration fee.

Wine Tasting for the Summer
Taught by Eric Miller, sommelier from Chaddsford Winery. Enjoy the expertise and wine selections from the premier wine expert from a local winery. Savor wines perfect for summer. We’ll sample pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, beaujolais and more. Sharpen your palette and learn how to describe the wines that you enjoy. Wine is the perfect companion to your parties and get-togethers, so learn about the subleties and pleasures of wines for the summer. Registration fee includes wine.
