Into the Streets!
Available for Viewing During Normal Business Hours

Into the Streets! is the first in a series of quarterly archival exhibitions that will be featured throughout 2010 funded in part by the William Penn Foundation. Rare and original documents and ephemera from the Center’s John J. Wilcox, Jr. Library and Archive will make up the majority of this display which will be on view in the Center’s new archival exhibition space through March.  Oppression, organization, militancy, liberation, activism: these are some of the buzz words that will help viewers examine and synthesize the political climate for LGBT people over the past 40 years, as documented by those who lived through it.

Out of the Closets
Thursday, March 11, 6:30 pm
(Rescheduled due to recent inclement weather)

The John J. Wilcox, Jr. Library and Archives presents "Out of the Closets," the narrative behind the Center's current exhibit "Into the Streets."  Archivist Bob Skiba tells the story of the birth and development of our American LGBT identity throughout the 20th century and our courageous struggle for survival and equality in the face of oppression, backlash and opposition. We'll highlight Philadelphia, its activists and its pivotal place in the gay rights movement.  Afterwards, in an open forum, we'll examine the state of GLBT activism today and discuss strategies for the future, reminding us that we are all a part of the gay history that is still being made. Free and open to the public.

Recent attendees of Into the Streets! have said:

"If you don't know your history you don't know who you are!"

"Thanks for this wonderful display of all men and women's quest for equality!"

"Great job all involved. This is a beautiful exhibit!"

"How far we have come and how far we have to go!"
